MySpace is another online platform which is built around the idea of social networking with its headquarters in Beverly Hills, California, US. It was launched in August 2003 by eUniverse. MySpace was ranked as the most popular social networking site in the United States in June 2006.

The latest updated data states that MySpace has more than 110 million active users around the globe out of which 85% are of age 18 or elder.


The idea is to create a virtual network of people whom you know from the real world as it is a more accessible form of communication. It is a perfect way to stay updated about your friends and business colleagues. MySpace has a huge collection of services like music,videos and various applications build over it. The user can create a profile page that can be used to meet people and tell about yourself. In addition to this, MySpace also offers a blogging place for every user. These blogs can be used to share various things amongst your friends over the network and also to connect to other people’s blogs. The user has the option to add templates, avatars, graphic and more.

After being acquired by News Corporation , MySpace’s revenues have grown rapidly, as it pursued lucrative advertising deals. My Space is in agreement worth $900 M with Google to provide search and advertising directly on MySpace site,which is set to expire in June 2010.

MySpace Features

  • Moods : Small emoticons that are used by user to depict his mood.
  • Blogs:Users can maintain blogs under their profile.it has standard fields of content, emotions and media.
  • Multimedia: Users can upload pictures and the default image will be seen as the profile picture on the main page.Fotoflexer, a photo editor, can be used to crop images and apply different effects on the picture.
  • Music: Each user has a public music playlist page which can be shared with other users.The search can be used to find more songs and build playlists.
  • Bulletins: This space is used a public platform to post notifications to the friend list.As the name says, its a bulletin board to display announcements. Bulletins can be useful for contacting an entire friends list without resorting to messaging users individually.
  • Groups : This feature allows a group of users to share a common page and message board. Groups can be created by anybody, and the moderator of the group can choose for anyone to join, or to approve or deny requests to join.
  • MySpaceIM: It is an instant messenger that uses one's MySpace account as a screen name. The user can log in the client using email associated with MySpace account and receive notification of new MySpace messages, friends requests etc.
  • Applications: Similar to Facebook Applications, MySpace provides with an API with which users can create applications for other users to post on their profiles.
  • MySpace News: MySpace provides a news service called MySpace News ,which integrates and displays news from various RSS feeds that users subscribe to. The news can be ranked by the user and accordingly the position of that news at the page is determined.
